The newly sworn in governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari, has commended the state lawmakers for impeaching his former boss, former governor Murtala Nyako.
Speaking on Thursday to Premium Times, he said Nyako’s removal from office paved the way for him to become governor although the lawmakers were only doing their constitutional job.Mr. Ngilari, who was the deputy governor under Mr. Nyako, got a favourable Federal High Court verdict that brought him into power yesterday (Wednesday) after the ousting of the former acting governor, Umar Fintiri, who ascended power in July following the impeachment of the ex-governor Nyako.
It was gathered that Messrs Nyako and Ngilari remained close although they belonged to different political parties.
Mr. Nyako while responding to the court’s judgment on Wednesday congratulated his former deputy and expressed optimism that the court would eventually reinstate him as the governor of Adamawa state.
Mr. Ngilari, who officially resumed office today (Thursday) paid a courtesy visit to the state office of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and reportedly thanked members of the State House of Assembly for performing their ‘legislative duties’ by removing his former boss from office.
According to him, there was no fault in the impeachment of his former boss, Nyako since the legislators were only performing their legal duties.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank most especially the Adamawa House of Assembly who performed their legislative duties that led to the removal of my former boss and by the divine arrangement of God, I am the new governor of Adamawa state. I pray that those I offended should forgive me and I also forgive those who offended me. Therefore we must now work together as a family, l can’t claim to be an island and I need your advice to forge the state ahead,” Ngilari said.
Speaking during the visit to the state secretariat of the PDP, the chairman, Joel Madaki, remarked that he was not favourably disposed to Mr. Ngilari before now, but stated that: “when God says yes, no one can say no.”
Madaki, who stated that the emergence Mr. Ngilari as the new governor was an act of God, promised that the state PDP must abide by every bit of the constitution of Nigeria since it has confirmed Mr. Ngilari governor of Adamawa state.
“This is your house, PDP is one party but uses different baton to execute their duties. The leadership of the PDP is fully on ground for you. Talk to us,” Madaki said.
Also, Salisu Kabilo, a representative of Verre state Constituency, who spoke on behalf of the state assembly members, assured that the lawmakers will be loyal to the new governor, and also urged the people of the state to work with the new government.
It would be recalled that Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, ordered the removal of the state acting governor, Umar Fintiri, and directed the state’s Chief Judge to swear in Bala Ngilari, as the new governor of the state. Ngilari was the former deputy governor under the impeached ex-governor Murtala Nyako,
However, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has cleared the air on their decision about the Federal High Court judgment.
