Boko Haram militants in Nigeria have attacked the northeastern town of
Mainok, near the city of Maiduguri. At least thirty people are reported
to have been killed on Friday when the fighters opened fire in a busy
marketplace in broad daylight. Eye-witnesses said the Islamists carried
off food supplies in stolen vehicles, while soldiers and civilians fled.
Boko Haram has taken control of a series of towns and villages around
Maiduguri in recent weeks. The army has struggled to defeat the
militants despite the declaration of an emergency in three northeastern
states last year
